Made Perfect in Weakness

We all have weaknesses and areas of our lives where our defences are sometimes a little lighter. Paul had his thorn in the flesh and the Lord told him that His grace was sufficient for the apostle. When it comes to burdens, weaknesses and our own thorns in the flesh, there are several ways in which the Lord will choose to lead us. Jesus told His disciples to take up their cross daily and a prime message of the New Testament is the need to be (continuously) dying to self but we should not forget that God still heals and that He also can give us strength to endure where before we were weak to submit to our flesh.

For sure, I can testify to the saving grace and strength of the Lord in that I have not been healed of or wholly delivered from my own thorn in the flesh but I am now aware of a heightened ability to deny self and overcome my stumbling block. It is true to say that the Lord has a plan for each of us specifically tailored to suit who we are, where we have been and where He wants us to go. It is true also to say that we should be of the mindset of denying ourselves and living Christ daily. Yes God does heal but He also strengthens and gives us His Power to overcome.

"But if you do not drive out the inhabitants of the land from before you, then it shall be that those whom you let remain shall be irritants in your eyes and thorns in your sides, and they shall harass you in the land where you dwell."
~ Numbers 33:55 ~

"And lest I should be exalted above measure by the abundance of the revelations, a thorn in the flesh was given to me, a messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I be exalted above measure. Concerning this thing I pleaded with the Lord three times that it might depart from me. And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in needs, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ’s sake. For when I am weak, then I am strong."
~ II Corinthians 12:7-10 ~

One Day Increased to Two

This particular writer is thoroughly enjoying reading through The Apocrypha during my lunch breaks at work. Yours Truly KJS therefore found it very interesting (and quite timely) that while I was finishing up reading The Wisdom of Sirach earlier today, it just so happened that I came across certain verses concerning Joshua. We read ...

"Joshua, the son of Nun, was mighty in war, And the successor of Moses in prophesying. He became, as his name describes him, Great to save his chosen, To take vengeance on the enemies that that rose up against them, So that he might give Israel their possessions. How glorious he was when he lifted up his hands, And pointed his sword at the towns! Before him whoever stood so fast? For he carried on the wars of the Lord. Was not the sun stayed by his hand, And one day increased to two? He called on the Most High Ruler, When his enemies pressed upon him on all sides, And the great Lord answered him with hailstones of mighty power." (Sirach 46:1-6)

How wonderful to seethe truths of Joshua 10 cited here too confirming that the sun was indeed held back long enough to count as two days, a sign and wonder improbable if not impossible for the heliocentric cosmology model and evidently possible if one accepts the biblical Flat Earth model. Note also that the name Joshua (which can be read Yeshua) means "Great to save His Chosen". We should take the Bible literally unless instructed otherwise and accept the power, majesty and sovereignty of God over His Creation. Perhaps you may also enjoy reading this related recent KJS article too ...

The Daughter of Jephthah

Nestled in the midst of The Book of Judges is the tragic story of the daughter of Jephthah, the unnamed (only) virgin daughter of a judge of Israel who, if we take the text as literal, paid the ultimate price for a vow made unto God without forethought by her father. We read in Judges chapter 11 that Jephthah was born of a prostitute in Gilead before fleeing his brethren and living in the land of Tob. He was "a mighty man of valour" (11:1) who was later sought by the elders of Gilead to be their captain and lead their troops when the Ammonites made war with Israel.

After his appeal to the children of Ammon was ignored, Jephthah vowed this vow unto the Lord: "If You will indeed deliver the people of Ammon into my hands, then it will be that whatever comes out of the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the people of Ammon, shall surely be the Lord’s, and I will offer it up as a burnt offering." (11:30-31) The tragedy was that after Jephthah had vanquished twenty cities the Ammonites, he returned to his birthplace in Mizpeh and his only daughter came out to him "with timbrels and dancing" meaning that it would be his virgin daughter who would be offered as a burnt offering unto the Lord. After two months of bewailing her virginity, we read that Jephthah "did with her according to his vow" (11:39) and "the daughters of Israel went yearly to lament the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite four days in a year" (11:40).

Some commentators state that his daughter was not actually sacrificed but held in seclusion, dedicated to the Lord and that human sacrifice was forbidden in the Torah. Whilst that might be the case, we should remember that the plain text seems to state that this event happened, literally. We should also remember that God tested Abraham regarding the sacrifice of his son Isaac before providing another offering at the due time (Genesis 22:1-14).

During the period of the judges of Israel we see that the Israelites often went whoring after other gods (despite repeated warnings and chastisements) and were only saved from their enemies by the mercy and grace of God through the likes of Othniel, Ehud, Deborah, Samson and Gideon. It is likely that they even forgot the Law as they backslid from the Lord after they had entered the Promised Land. With this in mind, in making his hasty vow and seemingly following through with it, Jephthah learnt a heavy lesson when dealing with the Lord as he lost his only daughter and his legacy. Some years later, King Solomon wrote these inspired words perhaps recalling the sorry story of the daughter of Jephthah in doing so ...

"When you make a vow to God, do not delay to pay it; For He has no pleasure in fools. Pay what you have vowed — Better not to vow than to vow and not pay."
~ Ecclesiastes 5:4-5 ~

What Jesus Said About Himself

I stumbled across some old preaching notes from at least 15 years ago earlier this week and it is wonderful to rediscover this particular word study. I remember going through the Gospel of John listing specific verses where the Lord Jesus Christ made statements about Himself, where He was from and Who He Was, Is and Is to come. Our Messiah couldn't do anything other than tell the truth as He is The Way, The Truth and The Life (John 14:6).

Yours Truly KJS still finds it amazing and humbling as to how many times the phrase "I AM" appears throughout the twenty nine (29) scriptures cited below. We should worship Him with all our being, our heart, our mind, our soul and our body. We read ...
  • "The woman said to Him, “I know that Messiah is coming” (who is called Christ). “When He comes, He will tell us all things.” Jesus said to her, “I who speak to you am He.” (4:25-26)
  • "But Jesus answered them, “My Father has been working until now, and I have been working.” (5:17)
  • "I can of Myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is righteous, because I do not seek My own will but the will of the Father who sent Me." (5:30)
  • "You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me." (5:39)
  • "I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst." (6:35)
  • "For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me. (6:38)
  • "No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up at the last day." (6:44)
  • "Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me has everlasting life." (6:47)
  • "I am the bread of life." (6:48)
  • "I am the living bread which came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread that I shall give is My flesh, which I shall give for the life of the world." (6:51)
  • "Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day." (6:54)
  • "You both know Me, and you know where I am from; and I have not come of Myself, but He who sent Me is true, whom you do not know. But I know Him, for I am from Him, and He sent Me." (7:28-29)
  • "I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life." (8:12)
  • "And yet if I do judge, My judgment is true; for I am not alone, but I am with the Father who sent Me." (8:16)
  • "I am One who bears witness of Myself, and the Father who sent Me bears witness of Me." (8:18)
  • "You are from beneath; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world. Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for if you do not believe that I am He, you will die in your sins." (8:23-24)
  • "When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He, and that I do nothing of Myself; but as My Father taught Me, I speak these things." (8:28)
  • "If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed." (8:31)
  • "If God were your Father, you would love Me, for I proceeded forth and came from God; nor have I come of Myself, but He sent Me." (8:42)
  • "Most assuredly, I say to you, if anyone keeps My word he shall never see death." (8:51)
  • "Yet you have not known Him, but I know Him ... and keep His word. Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad."(8:54-56)
  • "Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM." (8:58)
  • "I must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; the night is coming when no one can work. As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world." (9:4-5)
  • "He answered and said, “Who is He, Lord, that I may believe in Him?” And Jesus said to him, “You have both seen Him and it is He who is talking with you." (9:36-37)
  • "Most assuredly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep." (10:7)
  • "I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture." (10:9)
  • "I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep." (10:11)
  • "I am the good shepherd; and I know My sheep, and am known by My own. As the Father knows Me, even so I know the Father; and I lay down My life for the sheep." (10:14-15)
  • "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me." (14:6)
That's what's on my heart tonight. Be blessed.

Joshua 10: The Longest Day

I'm really enjoying my daily trawl of the Holy Bible from Genesis (the Book of Beginnings) onward. There is so much spiritual nourishment, wisdom, knowledge and history written under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit (II Peter 1:21) that we really should keep studying again and again lest we forget the wonders of God, His Creation and His Plan of True Salvation for Jew and Gentile alike. This week I've had another read of the Book of Joshua and I can't help but consider that there is evidence therein for the Biblical Flat Earth cosmology that I've considered recently here and here. We read in Joshua 10:1-14 that after the Lord had taken the city of Ai, the five kings of the Amorites - the kings of Jerusalem (Adonizedek), Hebron (Hoham), Jarmuth (Piram), Lachish (Japhia) and Eglon (Debir) - formed an alliance to destroy Gibeon because they had made peace with the children of Israel. Joshua led the armies of Israel against the confederacy of the five kings and, as the quintet fled their pursuers, the Lord cast down large hailstones on them before granting Joshua's request to literally stop the circle of the sun and delay its going down "about a full day" so that a full and complete victory over their foes was completed. We are told that "there was no day like that before it or after it ... for the LORD fought for Israel."
The Biblical Flat Earth model supports the Joshua 10 account ...
Now Yours Truly KJS is of the mind that one should take the Word of God literally unless otherwise stated. This applies to all 66 books of the Bible (and the books of the Apocryphica too). Hence, I have no problem with a six day creation narrative or the prophetic timetable of Revelation (the Book of Unveiling). The account in Joshua 10 is wondrous if not amazing and, in my considered opinion, it supports a biblical flat earth model more than the spherical earth theory. We are led to believe by so-called scientists that the earth is currently spinning at circa 1,000 miles per hour whilst orbiting the Sun at 66,600 mph with the Sun apparently speeding through the galaxy at 450,000 mph in what is effectively an ever spiralling vortex (see diagram below). Consider then the alternate view that the earth is stationary (see above diagram) with the sun and moon circling each other once every 24 hours. Surely restraining the path of the Sun in the flat earth scenario for up to 12 hours fits the events of Joshua 10 much more than the earth supposedly ceasing to spin for the same period of time in the heliocentric model? I absolutely believe that this fantastic event did literally happen so a cursory reading of Joshua 10:12-14 is warranted, as is a honest investigation of a biblical flat earth model.
Currently accepted solar-centric cosmology does not fit Joshua 10 ...
"Then Joshua spoke to the Lord in the day when the Lord delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel: “Sun, stand still over Gibeon; And Moon, in the Valley of Aijalon.” So the sun stood still, And the moon stopped, Till the people had revenge upon their enemies. Is this not written in the Book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and did not hasten to go down for about a whole day. And there has been no day like that, before it or after it, that the Lord heeded the voice of a man; for the Lord fought for Israel."

That's what's on my heart tonight. Be blessed.

Another Reason to Witness

There are many motivations for witnessing the True Gospel of the Kingdom to our lost family, friends and even enemies. The Lord truly is not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance (II Peter 3:9). The Lord Jesus Christ said during His sermon on the mount that "Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted" (Matthew 5:4). He also tells the Apostle John in the Book of the Revelation that one day "God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away." (Revelation 21:4).

Jesus also spoke the familiar testimony (and was not a parable as some suppose) about a rich man and a beggar named Lazarus wherein Lazarus died and resided in a place called Abraham's bosom and the rich man died and was found in hell (Luke 16:19-31). He called upon Abraham and asked that he would send Lazarus to his five living brothers and warn them of his end. Proverbs 10:7 also tells us that "The memory of the just is blessed: but the name of the wicked shall rot." whereas Isaiah 26:14 tells us that Israel's other lords had been destroyed and the Lord has "made their memory to perish."

The scriptures tell us that the redeemed shall be comforted, blessed and their memories healed. It is therefore not a stretch to say that the saved will not remember their lost family and friends in eternity. On the other hand, the scriptures also reveal in places that the lost will remember their lives, their decisions and their living kin that they left behind upon their death. They will retain remembrance of their lives yet be forgotten by their saved friends and family. Perhaps the very thought of such an immense tragedy will inspire us to witness the True Gospel to those that are without all the more.

That's what's on my heart today. Be blessed.

Malachy Machinations

The Prophecy of the Popes is attributed to Saint Malachy (the 12th century Archbishop of Armagh) and is thought to be a vague list of Roman Catholic Popes up to and including the 112th and final Pope known as Peter the Roman or Petrus Romanus. The name Petrus Romanus is accompanied with this description: "Peter the Roman, who will pasture his sheep in many tribulations, and when these things are finished, the city of seven hills will be destroyed, and the dreadful judge will judge his people. The End." It's relatively easy to link Malachy's so-called prophecy to the Second Coming of the Lord Jesus Christ, the rise of the Antichrist and False Prophet as well as the destruction of Mystery Babylon as detailed in the Book of the Revelation.

If we take these prognostications as literal and at face value, then things potentially get interesting. Pope Francis was born on Thursday 17th December 1936 making him on the way to his 83rd birthday later this year. If (and I mean if) the present Pope is that final Pope, then the closure of this present age is perhaps much nearer than we might imagine. This all depends, of course, on the accuracy of this so-called prophecy and/or the length of Pope Francis' lifetime. Yours Truly KJS does not advocate date setting when it comes to eschatology. Whilst it is a true saying that we are not even sure of tomorrow, the Word of God constantly reminds us to be ready when it comes to our attitude in these Last Days. One thing is for sure, True Believers are in for a bumpy ride in days yet future - be it persecution, testing by fire, the hatred of the world for His Name's sake and (in many cases) martyrdom. One could say the end is nearer than we think.

That's what's on my heart tonight. Be blessed.
