For God Is Love

#829: With the Tribulation yet future and the ultimate judgement of God thereafter, sometimes we focus only on those facets of the Lord Jesus Christ as the days pass by. As I listened to Mercy Me's classic worship song "I Can Only Imagine" this morning, a few tears were shed by Yours Truly KJS as I was gently reminded of the wonderful love that God has for for me and you, so much so that He sent His Only Begotten Son to willingly take our place on the Cross and pay the price for our sins. Three specific scriptures came to mind (aside from John 3:16). We read ...

"He who does not love does not know God, for God is love."
~ I John 4:8 ~

"The Lord is gracious and full of compassion, Slow to anger and great in mercy."
~ Psalm 145:8 ~

"For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope."
Jeremiah 29:11 ~

Let's simply focus today on the fact that God loves us more than we can ever know and He knows us better than we know ourselves. His ways are above our ways. His Will be done. His Kingdom come. We can completely trust Him. It's the simple things in life that often hit home and the Truth of God's immense Love for us certainly does that.

Recommended: Satan's Seed (Bob Mitchell)

#828: This writer can't improve on the review that Yours Truly KJS posted on amazon.co.uk the other day for Bob Mitchell's fabtastic end time novel "Satan's Seed" (ISBN 9781986445726) - a book that was read in under 24 hours last weekend - so here it is repeated for your perusal ...

Long overdue end times thriller ... without a pre-trib rapture
"What a fantastic read! A gripping last days journey of discovery for a group drawn into the ultimate conspiracy. I read this book in 24 hours and could not put it down. Filled with suspense and with a plot far more superior and believable to that of the Left Behind series, the reader feels that they are part of the team as they touch on the rise of antichrist. The real worth of this book is that you learn so much biblical eschatology too as events collide and you are left literally begging for part two of the story. Well done Bob! Please publish the next installment ASAP!"

Why Pre-Trib Theorists Should Revisit Their Rapture Timing

#827: Just in case you didn't already know, Yours Truly KJS is not an advocate of the theory of the pre-tribulation rapture of the True Church. Based on what we read in the Bible and not on the machinations of mere man, I believe that the rapture will actually occur after the wrath of Satan is complete and before the wrath of God is poured out in the timeline afforded by the Book of Revelation (more on this subject will follow in future articles). Accountability to God is therefore the name of the game for all those who teach and preach the Word of God. In the New Testament we read these three verses ...

"Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood."
~ Acts 20:28 ~

"Let a man so account of us, as of the ministers of Christ, and stewards of the mysteries of God."
~ I Corinthians 4:1 ~

"Obey those who rule over you, and be submissive, for they watch out for your souls, as those who must give account. Let them do so with joy and not with grief, for that would be unprofitable for you."
~ Hebrews 13:17 ~

When it comes to the rapture and the timing thereof, I have a real concern for those who have endorsed and taught the pre-tribulation theory as fact more than those who follow it blindly without being Bereans. For if it is the case that there is no pre-tribulation rapture, those very many souls who earnestly believe in it will not be prepared for the trials it will contain. All Christians go through trials and tribulations and it is highly unlikely that one generation of believers (particularly those in the West) will have the good fortune to miss the tribulation. Think on those in Iran, Egypt and Nigeria who are suffering right now for their faith in Christ.

Those who back and/or make merchandise of the pre-trib position will have a lot to answer for if they, their movements and their churches enter the time of testing. The unsaved are already dead in their sins so the prophesied falling away in II Thessalonians 2:3 could well refer in part to believers reacting badly to a rapture not happening at the time taught by their fave authors, pastors and churches. This is not without precedent as even some of Jesus' disciples fell away during His earthly ministry at Capernaum as they struggled with His teaching. We should therefore pray for these people because we know that the Truth will set them (and those under their oversight) free and because there is still time to be Bereans and repent before it is too late.

The Plain Truth: John 3:36

#826: The Lord Jesus Christ was very matter-of-fact when He spoke. He spoke the Truth because He was Truth and His amazing illustrations of Whom He was must have blown the minds of those who met Him or heard Him whilst He journeyed to the cross and completed His Father's work of True Salvation. He spoke words of comfort, words of warning, words of the future and words of the past. Jesus spoke of the reality that faces every man and woman on earth in just one sentence. In John chapter 3, verse 36 we read ...

"He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him."

On one hand the Lord reassures the true believer but on the other hand He confirms the fate of the unbeliever. If there were ever a motivation to try and reach the lost for Christ and warn errant man of his predicament, then surely the fact that any unsaved soul has God's wrath abiding on them should stir Christians into action. These are strong words indeed and words to be heeded. Any unsaved person living right now is in grave danger of experiencing death (twice) and the judgement of the Living God for eternity.

That's the bad news. The Good News is that even while we were sinners and yet far off (Romans 5:8), God was planning the ultimate Sacrifice and the most merciful of free gifts - the promise of True Salvation - for every soul who believes, follows and obeys the Lord Jesus Christ, His Will and His Word. Next time you go to work, go shopping, go on holiday or even go to church, you will meet, greet and possibly avoid many people on whom the wrath of God is resting. Pray for them and their salvation. Your friends, family, strangers and (most importantly) even your enemies. You are surrounded by people in an awful situation. Never forget that God is not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance i.e. eternal life (II Peter 3:9).

Recommended: The Rapture Timing Revealed (Bob Mitchell)

#825: My good friend Bob Mitchell published a 51 page book entitled: "The Rapture Timing Revealed" (ISBN 9781975724085) back in 2017 wherein he writes of his journey of eschatological discovery as he follows the Berean example in searching the scriptures to see what is explicitly said as to the timing of the rapture in the Bible. Initially taught (as most of us were) that the rapture precedes the Tribulation period, Bob surveys key Bible passages to show another view that lines up with the words of Jesus and the intent of key Greek words. If nothing else, this book challenges any Christian to pray, study and honestly investigate this thorny issue for themselves. At The Last Day

#824: One of the things that God does in scripture when He wants to gain your attention and get the message home is to repeat the same or similar phraseology. When reading my Bible recently, I couldn't help but notice that the Lord Jesus Christ uses a certain four words on four occasions within John chapter 6 when He was teaching His disciples about Himself in the synagogue in Capernaum. Chapter and verse numbers were, of course, added much later to help folks find their way through the written Word but Yours Truly KJS couldn't help but notice the words "at the last day" (NKJV) are spoken by the Lord four times in fifteen verses in a portion of scripture where His teachings were "a hard saying" (v.60) for some of His disciples who "murmured" (v.61) at His teaching and eventually "went back and walked no more with Him." (v.66).

Having recently fed the five thousand with five barley loaves and two small fishes, Jesus had been not only teaching that He was the "true bread from heaven" (v.32), "the bread of God" (v.33) and "that bread of life" (v.48) but also that man must needs eat of His flesh and drink His blood to have everlasting life. The Jews in that synagogue were having a hard time understanding what He was saying, perhaps taking His words as literally as Nicodemus did when he was told that a man must be born again to see the kingdom of God and then asking how an old man can enter his mothers womb a second time. But in this important passage of scripture, the Lord was in fact revealing quite clearly who He was, what He was doing (doing the will and finishing the work that His Father had given Him) and setting forth the True Gospel. It is in this context that Jesus promises that those who believe on Him will have everlasting life and that He will raise them up at the last day. Repeating those four words on four occasions is the emboldening and underlining of His Promise to all those who follow Him that He will be with them always, even to the end of the world. A promise both you and I can count on. Be comforted, be thankful and praise the Lord! Now read these four verses again in a new light ...

"This is the will of the Father who sent Me, that of all He has given Me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up at the last day."
~ John 6:39 ~

"And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have everlasting life; and I will raise him up at the last day."
~ John 6:40 ~

"No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up at the last day."
~ John 6:44 ~

"Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day."
~ John 6:54 ~

God's Escape Lane

#823: If there is one scripture that is responsible for my return to the proverbial fold then it has to be I Corinthians 10:13 and the perfect wisdom this verse contains. Without going into too much detail, Yours Truly KJS has been under the cosh physically, mentally and physically for a long period of time and under immense pressure to succumb to a lifelong issue.

Read also: Thy Will Be Done

The straw that broke the camels back was the realisation recently that I simply needed to give up my understanding and will and submit to that of God. I simply did not know enough about myself (or anything else for that matter) to rely on my own understanding or judgement to map a way out of the situation I had gotten into over time.

"No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it."

Read those words! What the above verse tells us is that the Lord in His infinite Wisdom has designed a way out (even a way through) every physical, mental and spiritual problem peculiar to man. there's nothing that He can't deal with or doesn't have an answer to even though at times the urge to go our own way threatens to overwhelm us and take us down dangerous paths. I can personally testify to this Truth.

An escape lane is a slip road provided on steep downhill gradients for vehicles to use if their brakes fail or overheat and need to stop in an emergency. Whether you know me or not, if you a believer and you are reading this article, please be assured that God has provided an escape lane for you too. Just ask Him to reveal it. It may be obvious or it may be not so obvious. If you do not yet know God as your personal Saviour, then there is Hope for you too because the Lord Jesus Christ IS your escape lane from death to eternal life. Check out John 3:16 afresh.

The Centre of Attention

#822: Have you ever been driving along, heard a horn being blasted and thought that it was aimed at you before realising that it had nothing to do with you? It happens to Yours Truly KJS from time to time and it occurred again this morning on the way to work and got me thinking (again). Initially I was inclined to feel guilty even though I'd done nothing wrong. I then wondered whether it was someone I knew trying to get my attention before settling on the conclusion that it was just because I was in a certain place at a certain time when this incident happened.

"He must increase, but I must decrease." (John 3:30)

I realised that I'd made a presumption that I was the centre of attention. It's something that human beings do. We are self centric in the natural and God works on that the moment we ask Him to take control of our life. The longer and closer we walk with the Lord, the more God-centric we become as He moulds, shapes and transforms us into the person He wants us to be over time even though sometimes we slip, stall and fall. John chapter 3 verse 30 truly says it all. Our perspective needs to change from selfishness to selflessness. Our centre of attention needs to shift from me to Thee. These familiar hymn lyrics also come to mind ...

"Turn your eyes upon Jesus,
Look full in His wonderful face,
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim,
In the light of His glory and grace."

Thy Will Be Done

#821: One of the things I have been thinking much about recently is human will. Since the Fall, human will has been in opposition to the Will of God. The will is vitally important in the process of True Salvation and also within the Triunity of God. As the Lord Jesus Christ approached the cross for our sins, He said these words ...

"Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done.” (Luke 22:42)

He chose to do the Will of His Father rather than His Own in a fundamental display of obedience and in advance of the most unbelievable, Selfless and Loving act ever seen on earth. The Lord also said these inspired words ...

"For whoever does the will of My Father in heaven is My brother and sister and mother." (Matthew 12:50)

Quite clearly, submitting to the Will of the Father is a defining characteristic for any born again believer. The Lord Jesus Christ led by example, He showed us the Way.

Confession time. For the last few years Yours Truly KJS has been backslidden. Disinterested in any closeness with God and looking for answers to longstanding issues in the wrong places. That's why you saw no substantial posts on here for a few years. Yet, despite this and with many thanx to the grace of God, I have experienced somewhat of an awakening. The reason for this is really quite wonderful. I have come to the place where I truly wish to submit to the Will of God because I've realised that if I do that, I simply cannot go wrong. The same applies to everyone and anyone. The Lord Jesus Christ did it and so should we. That's my message for today folks. Bless you!

Who Forgives Who?

#820: Many folks talk of the need to forgive yourself these days, some of them Christians. But Yours Truly KJS struggles with this most modern of mantras. Correct me if I'm wrong (and I could be) but my understanding of the scriptural practice of forgiveness operates in two spheres. The first and most important Biblical aspect of is our need to have our sins forgiven by God. That is why we need to be saved and be born again to enter into a new relationship with the Lord. The second aspect of forgiveness is the need to forgive each other

"For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses."
(Matthew 6:14-15)

"And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you." (Ephesians 4:32)

The emphasis of forgiveness in Biblical terms is therefore, in my opinion, either extended by God to man or by man to man. If we are right with God, forgiveness is a natural extension of His grace and flows through to others. I simply can't get my head around the need to forgive yourself. I can see the need of the flesh to excuse itself but not a person to forgive themselves. The key word here is "self". We need forgiveness from God and we need to forgive others. If I'm honest, I don't think I could look at myself in a mirror and actually say "I forgive you" but I could and would say those very same words to very, many other folks hoping to hear the same if I wronged them. Therefore I plan to keep seeking forgiveness from God and others but not from this writer.

A Balanced Diet

#819: A few days (or was it weeks?) ago, my daughter Rebekah asked me loads of questions about the Book of Revelation. And I mean loads of questions such as: Who do you think the two witnesses are? When do you think the rapture will be? What is the wrath of God?

These are good, honest questions to ask and it is vitally important that young Christians get a handle on the Book of Revealings. It is also equally important that they study the Book of Beginnings (Genesis) too and to understand how often the Lord Jesus Christ referred to the events within both books. I told her that studying and reading the Bible is like a three course meal, like a balanced diet. You need a starter, a main and a desert. You need all three together. You can't keep partaking of starters and you can't live your life eating pudding! You need Genesis, Jesus and Revelation. I explained further. I knew a man who was a fruitarian. That's someone who only ever ate fruit. He was thin as a rake but he had great skin! My point is that an unbalanced diet is as bad as no diet. As with all things in life, we need balance. Be it our daily meals or our walk with God.

We Don't Need Another Hero

#818: We've all done it, whether consciously or not. I'll explain what I mean. As a young Christian in 1984 (yes ... THAT long ago!), I was keen to explore Christian music and see what was out there. It wasn't long before I discovered Sheila Walsh and then Amy Grant, Michael W. Smith et al. It was therefore quite natural to Yours Truly KJS to start collating impressive collections of their records (I still have most of 'em). It was all too easy to become loyal to those artists, their music and their discographies. Looking back, they became my musical heroes and, if I'm honest, they often took first place in my priorities when they shouldn't have. It's a trap we all fall into whether it be a favourite singer, preacher, writer, worship leader, pastor, end times theory and so forth. We start to believe our eyes and hero worship.

We forget to walk by faith, we forget just Who really is pulling the strings.

I've been to many, many churches over time and one of the things that I've seen most often that really concerns me is when an assembly worships their pastor more than the Lord. If the pastor is there, so will they be and whatever he says or allows is heeded without the necessary testing. Before long, you can count on things unravelling. I've seen it and it leaves a bitter taste in the mouth.

That's the bad news. Here's the Good News. To quote Tina Turner's 1985 UK #3 hit single, "We Don't Need Another Hero". We've got the greatest hero of all time, even eternity - the Lord Jesus Christ. Someone Who loved us while we were yet sinners and paid the ultimate price so that we could be saved by grace. Not only is He Redeemer, He is Creator and He has a Plan for each of us. If Jesus isn't a Hero, then I give up. These are the immense, inspired words that come to mind and continue to leave me in complete awe when I consider what they really mean ...

"For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope."
~ Jeremiah 29:11 ~

In short, we don't need another hero. We already have One.

The Good and Faithful Servant

#817: I've been re-listening to some of my older Christian music CD's during this week and one of them is Paul Baloche's 2003 album: "Offering Of Worship" (Integrity Music #27572). Aside from it being an inspired set of worship songs, there's a track entitled "My Reward" which got Yours Truly KJS thinking again (once I start you can't stop me, apparently).

"His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord ..." (Matthew 25:21)

Any child who hears the words "Well done!" be it from a teacher or a parent (or even a Christian!) is going to be encouraged, happy and extremely pleased with themselves. And rightly so. In the above scripture lifted from The Olivet Discourse, the Lord Jesus Christ is talking about the Kingdom of Heaven and His return. True believers, of course, are born again sons and daughters of the One True God and it's interesting that this prophetic parable references a lord and his servants. Why is that? Because an essential element of the relationship between God and man is obedience. A freely given obedience and trust in your Lord.

When you obey the Lord and His Word, you are pleasing Him. In the above parable, there are two key words descriptive of the servant who did well: "good" and "faithful". There you have it. If you want God to be pleased with your efforts, just be faithful, be obedient in His sight and goodness will surely follow. One other thing ... never forget God does His Work through you as an obedient, faithful and pleasing vessel - not through your own strength.

"Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me, All the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the Lord Forever." (Psalm 23:6)

Filthy Rags

#816: One scripture that always sticks in my memory from my days of old is Isaiah 64:6 which, when paraphrased, essentially says that our righteousness is as filthy rags. And not just any old filthy rags. In this instance we are talking about soiled menstrual cloths. The dirtiest and most unclean of any filthy rags. Completely ruined and past the point of no return.

The galling thing to consider about that fact is that if our so-called righteousness is as filthy rags, then how awful are not only our personal sins but our fallen human nature. Yet, that inspired verse plucked out of the midst of the book of Isaiah actually offers an equal measure of hope to all. Why do I say that? Because if we are obedient and stay within the coverage of Christ's precious shed blood, we get to be imbued with His righteousness. It means we are safe, we are the friend of God, on His side, the winning side. Right at the beginning of the very same book, we read:

"Come now, and let us reason together,"Says the Lord, "Though your sins are like scarlet, They shall be as white as snow; Though they are red like crimson, They shall be as wool." (Isaiah 1:18)

Biblically, this repeats the message of the Word of God. That we are not good enough and the only way we can be saved is to accept His righteousness as our cloak. It's like elementary mathematics. Everything we do in trying to reach God's perfect standard in our own strength is like dividing any number by nil. In other words whether it's 1 million or just 1, if it's divided by nil it still equals nil.

However, if we accept the One True God, then all that we do in Him is divided by one and has eternal value, whether it's 1 million or just one. Do you see my point? It's 100% about Him and 0% about us. We started this discourse with something wholly negative and we are ending with something wholly positive. That's God. Only He can turn us around. Our only righteousness is His Righteousness. Our only hope is in Him. Don't even bother to try earning brownie points with God when His free gift of True Salvation is at hand. Accept it and move on up.

Fog Banks

#815: Yes ... You can believe your eyes! We're back in the game after somewhat of a hiatus. Maybe I'll explain more in days yet future but this message is inspired by a recent car journey.

Driving in fog is hazardous. Sometimes you can see it coming and other times it's just there in an instant. You need your lights on but not at full beam as too much light is as bad as no light. You also need others as well as yourself to be considerate and careful in order to make sure you reach your destination safely, if not a little late.

The Christian life is like that. Both in the everyday and over the long haul. Sometimes everything makes sense and you can see for miles. You know where you are going and you are sure as to what the Lord Jesus Christ wants you to be doing. And then you hit the fog banks of life. They can be brief and they can be so very dense. They can last for minutes and they can last for years.

We all hit fog banks. Unbelief. Unforgiveness. Despair. Pride. Overconfidence. Faithlessness. Arrogance. Disobedience (in other words - sin). Disappointment. Failings. Weakness. The list goes on. It's at those times that we are prone to fall. It's at those time that we need our fellow travellers on the Way to be have their lights on so we can see them and they can see us. They can then draw alongside us, and help us. Most of all, when we cannot see and the road is not clear, that is when we need faith and we need the Lord by our side. The Living Word Jesus Christ and the written Word, the Bible. We need to pray and we need to acknowledge our need. We need to be ready to receive guidance and heed it.

"Brothers, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, considering yourself lest you also be tempted." (Galatians 6:1)

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart; and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your path." (Proverbs 3:5-6)

Remember! Those fog banks can come along at any time and in any place. They can fool the best of us and find us wanting. You'll drive safely if you keep your eyes on the Lord.
